North African cinema never really gets the attention it deserves in the West, and movies from the 1970s and earlier seem to be especially rare. Specifically "The East Wind - El Chergui" is set in the 1950s in Tangier, when independence was something that started to become a tangible hope for the country. A society of women creates its own form of active resistance as the larger independence movement grows around.
